Bad Nauheim is rich in healing springs and owes its additional title of “Bad” to the local natural “treasures of the soil” - its mineral wealth.
While three springs were used as thermal carbonated brines for bathing treatments, there are six healing springs (so-called drinking fountains) in Bad Nauheim and the Schwalheim district, five of which can still be used for drinking cures today. The medicinal waters differ in their specific composition and temperature but are all subject to constant quality control. Due to the high content of freely dissolved carbon dioxide, the medicinal waters are also known as "acidulous springs".
Did you know that Bad Nauheim's medicinal waters saved Otto von Bismarck from a leg amputation? Due to poor circulation in his leg, his doctors initially advised him to have it amputated. But after a bathing cure in Bad Nauheim, the unbelievable happened: his leg was saved!
Bathing cures with natural carbonated waters are among the best-researched methods of balneotherapy. The Bad Nauheim springs are used as a preventive spa treatment and an accompanying therapy for cardiovascular, vascular and skin disorders. The thermal brine can alleviate back pain and rheumatism and activates the cardiovascular and immune systems.
In the Sprudelhof (fountain courtyard), the major and minor Ernst Ludwig springs, named after the Grand Duke of Hesse and by Rhine, come to the surface. They are still in use today for treatments in the clinics and in the tub baths.
The Romans already drank natural waters with a high content of minerals and active substances to do something good for their health. The drinking cure is therefore one of the oldest known healing methods.
Thanks to their carbon dioxide content, water from the five Bad Nauheim drinking springs is particularly easy to digest. Their naturally high CO2 content increases blood flow to the stomach lining and promotes digestion. A drinking cure drains and flushes the organism. Many doctors recommend it in combination with exercise. It is also advisable to take a drinking cure twice a year to detoxify the body. We recommend consulting your family doctor beforehand if you already have a medical condition.
The spa fountain, enclosed by a small temple complex, is located in the Trinkkuranlage (drinking cure salon). The newly erected Karlsbrunnen fountain stands on Karlsbrunnenplatz, and the Ludwigsbrunnen fountain can be found in the Südpark by graduation tower III. The Löwenquelle and Sauerbrunnen are located in the Schwalheim district.
